I took a trip to KLFM in King's Lynn today thanks to an invite from Charlie who was broadcasting a 4 hour show from there.
As his show started at 10am, it meant an early start with me leaving the house at about 6:30am to pick Charlie up at 7. Of course, thanks to it being early the journey was very easy and we arrived at the studio at about 9am.
It was fun to see the workings of a proper commercial radio station (part of the UKRD group), and I got to see how RCS Master Control works.
I also took advantage of the visit to put a demo CD straight onto the programme controllers desk with the offer of doing some fill in weekend work, or voicetracks. As I'm focusing on rebuilding my studio, I should soon be able to record voicetracks again.
The trip back from Norfolk took a little longer due to the extra afternoon traffic, but we had returned to Chelmsford by 4:10pm.
Just to summarise some other bits and pieces that have been going on since I haven't been writing too much lately, as I said I'm focussing on building up my studio and have recently purchased an MDF 6u rack unit and a Behringer Composer to go with it. I will also be scrapping the cupboard that I've been using to house my mixer and replacing it with a 1500mm x 70mm desk from Argos. It's literally just a work surface with cable management holes so I can place the rack unit on top with no problems. I'll be saving up for a new desktop mixer as well that will not require a hole to be cut into the desk.
I should also mention that I recently applied for a job at the BBC as a Trainee Studio Manager. I sent in the application on 14 August 2006 and heard back from them early last week. Unfortunately I was not chosen for an interview on this occasion but I'll keep my eye open in case a similar opportunity arises.
My ICDL (or ECDL) course is going well. I've now taken 3 out of the 7 exams and passed them (Internet & Email, File & Disk Management and MS Word). I'll be looking at taking Powerpoint next, followed by either Excel or Access, then the other one and Concepts of IT last.
Staying with courses, I'm also 4 weeks into my advanced amateur radio course. I've been learning about AC circuits, inductance, basic electronics, safety and operating. At the moment I think I'm just about grasping it all but it's certainly requiring a bit of study. We get set homework to do throughout the week and are told to make sure we study the manual we have been given. If all goes well though and I pass the exam, I should be able to apply for an M0 callsign with all the privelages of the full licence!
